Research to Value

Unlocking commercial opportunity

In the ever-changing Higher Education landscape, it's never been more important for researchers to understand and exploit the commercial potential of their work. Research to Value has been created to address this need directly.

Research to Value is an eight-week online programme in which researchers and Professional Services staff work in pairs to identify and advance a research idea into a fully articulated commercial opportunity.

Throughout the programme, researchers learn how to utilise their research to maximise commercial opportunity, while Professional Services staff learn how to support researchers interested in commercialisation.

About the programme

The Scottish Funding Council has partnered with Skillfluence to deliver Research to Value, a professional development programme designed to enhance the commercialisation support skills of Professional Services staff at Scottish Higher Education Institutions.

If you are a Professional Services member of staff at a Scottish HEI, Research to Value offers a fantastic opportunity to learn a time-efficient process for helping researchers to identify and define commercial opportunities and support them on their commercialisation journey.

This is an action-oriented, output-focused programme where you work together with a researcher from your institution. Together, you will explore the commercial potential of their research portfolio and leave with a well-defined opportunity derived from it, including an estimated commercial value and specific next steps for progressing the opportunity.

Who is the programme for?

How does it work?

Research to Value is an interactive cohort-based programme that takes teams of Professional Services and researcher partners through a structured process to define commercialisation opportunities from a research portfolio. Each cohort brings together participant teams from Higher Education Institutions across Scotland, contributing to shared practice across the ecosystem, and we have previously created opportunities for alumni to gather and network in person.

The programme features a blend of front-led content alongside space for dedicated discussion between pairs. Each workshop explores key concepts, and teams are given breakout time to work on their opportunity, as well as application activities to undertake between workshops.

The programme is delivered as four 2-hour online workshops, delivered fortnightly, with an emphasis on application. The workshops are designed to be ring-fenced time for developing opportunities, and activation sessions further expand development, leading to a presentation of the opportunity at the final workshop.

Research to Value is ideal for Professional Services staff who support researchers with commercialisation, such as those working in research innovation, knowledge exchange, engagement, entrepreneurship, IP and commercialisation, and business development, among others.

The programme is designed to be a journey which you and your chosen researcher embark on together. You will work together to understand, appreciate and place a commercial value on an opportunity stemming from their existing research.

We recommend that you apply for this programme with a researcher who feels they have commercial opportunities which could be developed from their research, but lack the time, skills or resources to realise their full potential. The programme is designed for all disciplines and is suitable for potential commercial pathways (i.e. spinouts, licensing, consultancy, CPD, social enterprises, etc).
